A scat imporvizációs énekmód, melyben az emberi hangot hangszerként használják, azaz értelmetlen szótagokkal, hangokkal énekelnek.
Eredetileg a kultikus ceremóniák egyik fontos mozzanata volt.

A jazzben Ella Fitzgerald és Louis Armstrong mestere volt a scat mûfajnak, mely különösen a bebopban jutott nagy szerephez.

A rockzenében is használták a scatet, pl. Little Richard a "Tutti Frutti" c. szám rövid bevezetőjében: a-wop-bop-a-lou-bop-a-lop-bam-bum.

Ebben a stílusban ért el nagy népszerűséget Scatman John, aki dalaiban és beszédében egyaránt dadog. (Egyik sikerdalának címe és szövege: "Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop".)

A scat-ben is kiemelkedik a rendkívül sokoldalú Bobby McFerrin.

Scat singing

Jazz vocalists love to solo, but that might not be the case if a singer had to invent new lyrics when he or she wanted to riff. Enter scat singing. Scat style substitutes words with nonsense syllables allowing vocalists to improvise in the style of a musical instrument. Trumpeter Louis Armstrong is rumored to have invented scat when he dropped his lyric sheet during a performance, but bandleader Jelly Roll Morton contested this claim, citing comedian Joe Sims as the first man who ever did a scat number in the history of this country.
